PCB Customs Duty in India — What You Pay & How to Avoid the Hassle

May 20, 2026 7 min read WHYPCB Team

If you've ever tried to import PCBs from overseas to India yourself, you've probably hit a wall: customs duty. Your PCBs arrive at an Indian port or airport, get held by customs, and suddenly you're dealing with paperwork, import tax calculations, and possible delays.

This guide explains exactly what customs duty you pay on PCBs imported to India, how the calculation works, and — most importantly — how to avoid the entire hassle by using WHYPCB.

TL;DR: Importing PCBs directly from overseas attracts ~28–30% effective duty (BCD + SWS + IGST). When you order via WHYPCB, all duties are included in your INR quote. Zero customs stress. GST invoice included.

What Taxes Apply When You Import PCBs from China to India?

When an overseas PCB shipment enters India, it is assessed by Indian Customs under the Customs Act. Three main charges apply:

1. Basic Customs Duty (BCD)

PCBs fall under HS Code 8534 (Printed Circuits). The BCD on imported PCBs is currently 10% of the assessed import value (CIF — Cost + Insurance + Freight).

2. Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS)

SWS is charged at 10% of BCD. So if your BCD is ₹500, the SWS is ₹50. This is a small but mandatory charge on most imported goods.

3. Integrated GST (IGST) on Imports

IGST at 18% is levied on the combined value of CIF + BCD + SWS. This is the largest component and brings the effective duty burden to approximately 28–30%.

Duty Component Rate Example (₹1,000 PCB value)
Basic Customs Duty (BCD) 10% of CIF ₹100
Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS) 10% of BCD ₹10
IGST on Imports 18% of (CIF + BCD + SWS) ₹199
Total Effective Duty ~28–30% ₹309

The Customs Clearance Process — What Actually Happens

When you import directly from an overseas manufacturer yourself, here's what you face on the Indian side:

  1. Shipment arrives at Indian port/airport — FedEx or DHL holds it for customs assessment.
  2. Bill of Entry filed — The courier files a BE on your behalf (or you need to file one yourself for commercial imports).
  3. Duty demand raised — Customs calculates the duty based on the declared value on the manufacturer's invoice.
  4. Payment required — You must pay the duty before the shipment is released. Couriers typically advance this and bill you.
  5. Release and delivery — After payment confirmation, the shipment is released for final delivery.

This process can take 1–5 extra business days on top of the manufacturing and shipping time. If the declared value is disputed or the shipment is flagged, it can take longer.

How WHYPCB Eliminates Customs Hassle

When you order PCBs via WHYPCB, the process is completely different — and much simpler for you:

  • WHYPCB imports the PCBs in bulk shipments, handling all customs clearance at our end.
  • All import duties (BCD, SWS, IGST) are included in your INR quote upfront — no surprises.
  • You receive a domestic delivery from WHYPCB to your door — no customs involvement for you.
  • You get a proper 18% GST invoice from WHYPCB, which you can use for ITC claims.

Can I Claim the Import IGST as Input Tax Credit?

If you're importing directly, technically yes — but the process requires filing IGST import details in your GSTR-2B and matching it with the Bill of Entry. This is complex and error-prone for most small businesses.

When ordering via WHYPCB, it's simpler: you receive a standard B2B GST invoice and claim ITC on it normally through GSTR-2B reconciliation, just like any domestic purchase.

Bottom line: Ordering directly from an overseas manufacturer costs you time, paperwork, and customs fees that can be unpredictable. WHYPCB gives you a fixed INR price with everything included and a proper GST invoice. See how our customs handling works →
